Carolyn Smith was born in Sheffield, and trained at Sheffield and Leeds Colleges of Art where she studied Fine Art and Art History, specialising in sculpture. She has lived for many years in the village of Ampleforth on the edge of the North York Moors and has grown to love the landscapes of the Moors and the Howardian Hills. Carolyn's early training as a sculptor has been the most important influence on her artistic interpretation of the world. She is drawn to the sculptural qualities of the local landscape, and is particularly fascinated by trees, which she views as wonderful sculptural objects in their own right. Her intricately detailed drawings are completed in pen and ink and coloured pencil. In 2011 Carolyn was Artist in Residence at Castle Howard Arboretum. Many of her works are inspired by the magnificent trees to be found there.
